Here are some of my camera setups with a DIY flash diffuser:
* Nikon D90 + 55-200mm Lens + Raynox DCR250 + S400 Flash + DIY flash diffuser :
I use a DIY (Do It Yourself) flash diffuser to control the light coming from the flash and direct it to my macro subject.
* Nikon D40 + 18-55mm Reversed Lens + Built-in Flash + DIY flash diffuser :
* Nikon D5300 + 55-300mm Lens + Raynox DCR250 + DIY flash diffuser :
I also use the above shown DIY diffusers to soften the effect of the built-in flash.
If I want to go out shooting with a light camera setup, then this is the best option because it is not needed to use a large flash... the camera´s built-in flash is enough as long as you do not go for very small apertures.
I also tried shooting macro without flash, but the results were not satisfactory because the images are usually blurry... so I always use flash even during daytime.
If you find that the flash is so strong, you can also adjust the power of your flash on Menu>Setting>Flash Control>Manual and try using 1/2 or 1/4 power for your flash.
Below are sample shots taken with the flash diffuser:
